World Blood Donor Day
Jun 2016

A spider bite might not transform you into a superhero, but a small needle prick and a little of your time sure can. Yes, by donating blood you’ll be saving up to three human lives each time.

Here are some of the benefits you gain for your humanitarian efforts:

Reduces Risk of Heart Disease
Regular blood donations help to keep the levels of iron in the body in check, especially in males. This has shown to reduce heart disease.

Burns Calories
One time blood donation helps you shed 650 Kcal. However, blood can be donated safely once in two or three months and not more frequently. This will depend on your health status and your blood hemoglobin and iron levels.

Reduces the Risk of Cancer
Consistent blood donation is associated with lowered risks for cancers including liver, lung, colon, stomach and throat cancers.

Free Health Check-up
You can donate blood only if you are fit enough to do so. Blood donors receive a mini-physical and are told about their blood pressure levels as well as their cholesterol levels. Along with a health check-up, the donor will get a free blood analysis and be notified of their blood type.

Blood that is donated is checked for several health factors such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis.

Blood Donors Must:
  • Be in good general health and feeling well
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Weigh at least 50 kg
